L38 famous for being fast out the door. Before E45 had a truck company L38 would beat L31 first due to box 2914, Boston road at Southern boulevard.

Back in da day before 56 Truck went to 48 and 58 Truck went in with 45 and before Barb 38 had a big area.

As you say Ed, before the infusion of L's 56 and 58 (at their present and prior locations) and BARB, L38 responded first or second due with the most number of engine companies in the Bronx. Twelve, count 'em (clockwise from north on the compass)...
62, 97, 61, 90, 45, 82, 46, 42, 75, 48, 79 and of course 88. That's West Farms to Mosholu, The Concourse to Morris Park. Big area, always a busy house.
