The problem is so rampant in the Bronx that there needs to be a task force that goes out three or four nights a week and patrols the streets from 2300-0600 with three or four tow trucks and some cops. Impound the vehicles - even if just 6-8 cars a night. And posted on social media etc will have an impact. Anything else like summons etc just isn’t working.
 
There seemed to be plenty of engines and trucks available for relief, why not have an additional rescue and squad on scene to relieve the initially assigned rescue and squad? I'm sure they would like a blow as well.

It’s crazy to think that sometimes there are fires without a rescue or squad and they still go out.

But they didn’t relieve the 1st rescue and squad. They operated with 2 rescues and 2 squads in the building. Imagine if it collapsed?

The job was hairy. Lots of companies were running out of air, including rescue. Chief likely decided he wanted one more incase things went from bad to worse. The FDNY has the resources, might as well utilize them.

Was just coming over the Willis Avenue Bridge when they were putting it out. Less than 10 mins away at night! During the day would have been a different story! The drop ceilings dropped in the store making a hard push plus the heavy amount of stock and roll down gates for sure! Fire was probably already in the walls on the 2nd Floor.

It is very rare for additional Rescue Cos. or Squad Cos. to be special called to a scene, expect for a 10-66 = Mayday! or 10-60 =Building Collapse or another major Emergency. I think the fire was of such magnitude that the I.C. thought that a additional Rescue & Squad were necessary. Remember the number ONE job of Fire Rescue Companies was and is to rescue firefighters. Don't promote bush league.
More professional to block the car in with the rig until the PD tow truck can hook him and drag it to the impound lot. the $250 to get your car back on top of the summons $$ will hurt more than an insurance policy that has full glass coverage.

And the aggravation of having to go get the car. Pay the summons and miss work, etc
 
The use of TEMPORY exterior streams at advanced fires, to reduce fire conditions has been proven to save both life and property. Once again, the Chicago Fire Department has used this tactic for years and calls it "Resetting the Fire". This is a "Holding Action" to reducer the fire while hand hoselines are positioned. These fires are getting away because not enough water is being put on the fire fast enough by only depending upon aggressive handlines. Once advanced heavy fire is "Knocked Down" aggressive handlines are indeed the way to go. No Engine Company wants to watch the Tower Ladder or a deck gun, large caliber streams, put down the fire. But at times is necessary and can be better. I have over 50+ years of Firefighting experience and many more years of "Buffing" fires. Consider what I am indicating. The same reason that handlines are sometimes delayed at these fires during the winter is the same reason why master streams will also be delayed. Unless we get thawing apparatus going on every structural run and have PD tow trucks responding with us also, the delays will be inevitable and have only gotten worse in the last decade.

I can remember a loooong time ago when the AUC came out, that 1 3/4" hose could be used only when compatible with fire conditions. Do you think the amount of water being used due to hose size may be inadequate? I remember when we had to stretch 2 1/2" in P.Ds for the first line. Big water = shorter fire duration.

I’ve also read articles calling it “A Defensive Offense” due to the fact that interior items now burn at a much hotter temp and that building construction now contains and holds in more heat that hitting it from the outside will cool down that interior somewhat helping the interior attack and assist with the search.

You must be the senior man on this forum if you retired from Engine 25 which was disbanded almost 80 years ago.
