They're doing ok thank you for asking. The house has been demolished but we haven't gotten any word about the cause yet, We're hoping to find out something just to know how it happened. Most important thank God my nephew woke up and saw the fire outside so they could all get out. I was inside a...
I should have said volume I'm curious if that would be a problem at a fire with multiple large caliber streams being used at the same time. Maybe 2 or 3 TL for example.
Won't there be a problem with water pressure now that NYC doesn't have the high pressure hydrants assuming they can't draft? I would think getting this engine close to the scene if it arrives at a multiple alarm fire will be difficult with the first due units there. Is NYC planning to use it...
Thank you Mack this is a great thread! If you look at one of the pics you linked to on Flickr from Mt. Loretto you can see the L82 ALF tiller on the right. Its hard to make out numbers but I see a Rapid Water rig in one shot and I think one of the satellites.
He's absolutely right. Strange how a city that spends millions to put up speed cameras for "safety" not revenue (of course) doesn't have money to invest in public safety for fire emergencies. When you look at the NYC Open Data map of working boxes, there are areas where there isn't a "working"...
Free enterprise! But you guys here are a good group and I appreciate all the well wishes after my sister lost her house. I would grab a copy ASAP though because I emailed them earlier this year and it won't be updated or reprinted.
The NYC Fire Alarm Pocket Guide will also have the boxes listed in order by number and are separated into boroughs. Its not as fast as looking on the website but you get used to what part of the borough the boxes are in. NYC Open Data has box location maps but these only cover working boxes and...
I guess the current generation can't figure out a pull box because it doesn't have a touchscreen? A cell doesn't do much good when you're running out of the house that's burning and don't remember to grab it. Its a joke when there's either no box anymore or the one there may or may not work...
I'm trying to find out if a pull box across the street from my sister's house works. No one tried it the night of the fire but I've emailed the city about it with no response. I'd just like to know if its a working box good luck getting info.
This is when cable splicing was an art. Everyone had a sense of pride about their job. Management knew exactly what needed to be done and they had extensive knowledge of the job. Sad to say things aren't the same.
This one is the one we were shown in telephone school.
The cable vault is where it started I believe the cause was given as a short. At one point I think they tried to flood the vault with foam.
When I started it was still NY Telephone. Your dad I'm sure was at the 2av CO fire. Alot of our senior guys when I started worked there also. There's a great video on youtube about it and shows alot of 1970's rigs including original Satellite 2. Its called reconnecting 170,00 customers.
