LAFD as well as most other departments in CA respond on Mutual Aid sometimes a distance of 150 miles or more. What kind of range would this rig have? It might be a modern version of the ALF Turbo Chief that San Francisco had in the early 60's and didn't last very long.
The "Ladder 78" frontpiece is black so it is not from a ladder company. It is probably Engine 78, the fire boat that was at 90 St. & the East River before becoming Marine 5 in 1959.
Ladder 23 was only in their own house for 20 years (1898-1918). Is this is a record for the least amount of time in a permanent quarters? Also, a lot of companies were only combined in the 40's and 50's. I wonder what the reason was for moving the truck.
In the "Big House" on 162 St. Eng. 275 was in the right bay and responded to the north while Eng. 299 was in the left bay and responded to the south. When those two companies were moved it was reversed. Anyone have any idea why? Maybe just another FDNY mystery!
"22 and 44 actually built with that plan but not enacted". It's too bad that 22's qtrs. were not built to house 44. A few months after it opened Sq. 9 was organized. Very tight qtrs. for 3 companies.
The New York Firemen's Cycle Club is the oldest FDNY-affiliated organization in the City; in fact, it pre-dates by more than two years the formation of the 5-Borough consolidation of 1898, which resulted in "Greater New York", now known of course as New York City.
Organized on October 2, 1896...
I don't think I ever saw Earl get excited or mad. He was always calm, cool, and collected. A great firefighter, terrific truck chauffeur, and an outstanding role model as a senior man. Rest In Peace, it was an honor and a privilege to know you.
I remember seeing Ladder 123's ALF at the shops with the curved exhaust. It had just been delivered. As stated previously the shops changed the exhaust to a straight stack. Maybe it was done to minimize the effect on the tiller man?
