An unusually severe fire in the small town of Ånge (pop. ~3,000), Sweden this morning.
Fire broke out in a four story apartment building with 18 apartments. It seems to have started in one apartment and rapidly spread to several others and the roof. The rapid spread is surprising, because from the looks of the building it appears to be a relatively modern one that you would expect to be ”fireproof”, with compartmentalization between apartments and the stairwell. Here it seems to have gone very fast, with numerous residents trapped, smokefilled stairwell, atleast one jumper and some residents fleeing to the roof in panic. The ones that got out on their own appears to be injured to various degrees. The fire department managed to do a number of rescues via windows, balconies and the rooftop. Some are said to have very serious injuries. Still haven’t managed to do a complete search of the building.

Ånge is as mentioned above a small town, it has a firehouse with a normal staffing of one officer and four firefighters, that are retained/paid on call with a response time requirement of rolling from the station within five minutes of a page (though usually small departments like this will do a page of those crews not currently on call as well in situations like this). It is in a low population area with long runs for second due units and so forth. Not an enviable situation to be in for those firefighters, heavy fire, multiple people trapped and in immediate danger, and just a small crew that has to handle a lot on their own for an extended period of time before reinforcements arrive.
