NJ Incident Alert Network · toa81ni2s0t6go1h6if38rd ·

BREAKING NEWS: City of Passaic 225 Passaic St, X of Canal Street at the Dye-Tex aka Qualco plant we have a report of an 11 alarm Chemical Fire (Chlorine), water supply issues reported in the area multiple hydrants are non-operational at this time, The Neptune Pumping System was activated. The Neptune system is capable of dispursing 7000 gallons of water per minute via 12-inch lines. This will be installed at the canal to supply water to the fire units on the scene. The wind is blowing the smoke southeast at 12 M.P.H. with 20 M.P.H. gust and the smoke is being seen on the doppler radar and has stretched about 60 miles southeast from the scene. The winds are expected to increase as the night progresses. The FAA has issued a No-Fly Zone around the incident. Marine units are not able to reach the scene due to low tides at this time. The New Jersey State Marine Police refused to respond during the initial phase of the response procedure although they were notified they did refuse to respond. Residents who live south of the incident are advised to stay inside and close the windows to avoid exposure to the chemical fumes. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has been notified and activated. Chlorine is a toxic gas with corrosive properties. It is widely used as a bleach in the manufacture of paper and cloth and in manufacturing solvents, pesticides, synthetic rubber, and refrigerants. Chlorine has also been used as a chemical warfare choking agent. The lowest level at which humans can smell chlorine and notice its irritant properties generally provide sufficient warning of exposure; however, chronic exposure to chlorine causes adaptation of the sense of smell (olfactory fatigue) and tolerance to its irritant effects. Because of this, persons with a history of prolonged exposure lose the ability to identify when they are being exposed to chlorine. Chlorine is usually shipped in steel cylinders as a compressed liquefied gas.

Would they call FDNY mutual aid, even if it’s a marine unit for the river? 10 alarms and conditions look unchanged.

There is a regional boat task force now in service for that area. It consists of : Edgewater, North Hudson, Hoboken, Jersey City, Bayonne, Linden, Elizabeth, Perth Amboy, Newark, Carteret, Kearny and Secaucus. Fire boats are directed to emergencies by the North Hudson dispatchers from their Union City dispatch center covering Alpine to Perth Amboy including such waterways as the Hudson, Hackensack and Passaic Rivers, Newark Bay, the Kill Van Kull, etc. The area is divided into eight zones with a running card assignment of a minimum of three fire boats answering individual calls for aid, fires, etc.cover this area.
