Engine and Truck 6 are at 3958 Penn Avenue and 6's old house (1873) is up the street and around the corner at 44th and Calvin- now a parking garage. The assignment was Box 562- Penn Avenue and Main Street.

If you make a left turn out 6's quarters and go about 100 yards down on to 39th Street you will be at the site of the old Allegheny Arsenal. On September 17, 1862 it exploded killing 78 people, mostly young women. This happened on the same day as the Battle of Antietam- the bloodiest single day in American history. Later, on 39th Street, the Arsenal Elementary School would be built. Johnny Unitas played semi-pro football on the school field. In 1954, the children there were used by Jonas Salk to test the initial polio vaccine.

And, if you go 12 blocks down the hill at 28th Street (past 25's old house) was the shop where George Westinghouse invented the airbrake- revolutionizing the way the world traveled. And, it was ground zero for the 1877 Railroad Strike.
