1/5/26 Bronx 5th Alarm Box 2750

That's about an hour and five minutes give or take. But given the late night, it probably took less
Aslo L123 to L49 which is about 55 proboably took less. The system kept most relocations to another. It's the fire season so we'll definitely see more 3-5 alarmers from now til April. I hope peope haven't removed their smoke detectors because they can go off while cooking eventhough there's no fire.

103 truck to 19.. now that’s a long haul
I think L109 to L19 would get the mileage prize.
Strange that E94/L48 were nowhere to be found. Were they operating somewhere?
First time I've heard a S/C for Rescue and Squad - to relieve a Resue and Squad. If they were basically doing truck work, why not keep them available and s/c two additional trucks?

Might have been doing more specialized truck work the would require a rescue or squad

I'll take a stab at your question: I think the view is that having a rescue and squad available on scene is important in case something goes sideways. Under normal circumstances, yes, they're doing truck work, but they'll be put to work alongside the FAST team if something goes wrong. In this case, it looks like the extra R and SQ were special called about an hour in, and given the intensity of the fire, R3 and SQ41 would have been working hard for an hour at that point and so, thinking along with the IC, the special calls may have been to provide some fresh SOC companies as an extra layer of insulation.

It is rare but if you follow the rundowns here I think this has been done previously a few times.

What type of “specialized truck work” would require a rescue or squad that a truck company can’t do?
Apparently someone is pushing for additional Rescue & Squad to respond possible on the 4th Alarm. Which it’s probably only going to be a squad as it’s way to much to send a 2nd Rescue

There might be certain areas were a chief would be hesitant to put a truck in that he would send a SOC company to
Can you give me a specific example of a task, at a fire in an occupied multiple dwelling, that a chief might be hesitant to put a truck company and could only be accomplished by a SOC company?

Remember that the rescues are often utilized by the Chiefs as recon throughout the fire building. Whereas the truck companies are focused on a particular area and or task within the building, the rescue personnel can serve as additional eyes for IC. Yes a fire sector chief does that but having 5-6 more all over and inside the fire building helps the IC tremendously in many cases. This job certainly appears to have been a ball buster. I like HFN01’s response - the extra rescue and squad were most likely to get fresh SOC personnel there as a contingency. Either way, remember we weren’t there. So as I watch the videos, all I can say is tough job on a very cold night, everyone made it back to quarters - well done lads

This idea of an extra rescue and squad on the 4th alarm is interesting. I share the skepticism about whether it is required as mandatory (vs right now where the IC can special call based on their own assessment of conditions).

One thing to note is if you buy in to the idea that rescue and squad are a contingency in case things go sideways, it seems that most MAYDAYs and 10-66s occur early in incidents, *not* on the 4th or 5th alarm when often things have gone to exterior operations.

Most definitely.
