What is “Hot truck”?

I knew that. I meant what makes it different then all the other EMS units dispatched
According to our Silicon Overlords:

In FDNY EMS jargon, the term "Hot Truck" refers to the designated ambulance that is actively positioned at the loading or treatment area of a fire or Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) and is ready to immediately receive and transport the next patient.
Here is how the system works on the radio and at a scene:

  • Staging vs. Action: When multiple ambulances respond to a major incident, they are sent to a staging area ("cold" trucks) so they don't block the narrow NYC streets.
  • The "Hot" Status: The Incident Commander or EMS Medical Branch Director will select one specific ambulance to pull up to the tail end of the scene near the triage/treatment sector. This vehicle keeps its engine running and its crew standing by.
  • The Rotation: On the radio, an officer will announce something like, "Ambulance 54 Juliet is the Hot Truck." As soon as that ambulance is loaded with a patient and departs for the hospital, the next staged ambulance is called forward to fill the spot, immediately becoming the new "Hot Truck."

Please tell me it's 54John and not 54Juliette. I've been out of the NYC EMS system for a long time, but the way society is going that change actually wouldn't surprise me.

If there using Juliette thats actually the usual phonetic spelling of the letter J. Someone may have swapped to the NATO/maritime version of phonetic spellings. If I remember correclty EMS used to use William for W. Which would differ also. Dont know if they still do but there was a mix of EMS vs standard phonetics.
