Location FDR Drive at East 83rd Street

Car fire in the southbound lane of the FDR at approx 83rd street. FDR is Elevated at this location and is covered.

Marine 6 hitting it from the water. Units having a hard time accessing the fire due to traffic and the difference in elevation.

Rundown:
Initially came in as 71 and FDR. E22 and L13 Took it in but were too low, taken off the box.

There used to be a standpipe system for that section of the FDR Drive where it's stacked, roughly between 81 Street and 89 Street.
E-22 and L-13 would respond to the east end of Gracie Square (East 84 Street) where there was a siamese and a staircase that gave access to both levels of the Drive.
In the late 70s/early 80s a question was raised as to when that system was last used and if it was ever maintained. I think the answer was some time in the 60s, so the outlets were eventually capped along the Drive and the system decommissioned.
You can still see the capped outlets and the doors from the stairways that provided access to the roadways if you look for them.

The stairwells are still in operation. The chief of the 10th battalion took one to get to the fire. I took it out. Never knew those were there.

Click on the link below for a shot from Google Maps that shows the southbound Drive (in miserable condition) with the access door, a capped standpipe outlet, and an OOS alarm box.
