Just a comment regarding coverage.  SI had 2 battalions (Bns 21 & 22) when FDNY began coverage in 1905.  Expanded to 3 battalions in 1930 (Bn 23).  Nothing since then.  At this 3rd alarm, looks like the 21, 22, 23 from SI as well as Bklyn 42, 43, 40, 32 operated.  Maybe others (safety, rescue).  I assume other Bns were moved around but how do you handle simultaneous multiples these days?

SI's Bn 23 response area is tremendous.  Coverage is already thin.  SI should have a squad (response time for Sq 1 to distant areas of SI much too great), another Bn - and maybe a few more engines (Charleston, New Springfield/SI Mall area, Pleasant Plains) and trucks (Rossville, Dongan Hills).  Look at what comparible cities have which are smaller in size and population.

SI has a poplation of 475, 000 in about 60 sq miles covered by 18 engines, 12 trucks, 1 rescue and 3 Bns.  KC is smaller and has 34 engines, 12 trucks and 3 rescues.  Raleigh NC, smaller, has 28 engines, 10 trucks, 3 rescues and 4 Bns.  Atlanta, smaller, 30 fire stations.  Cleveland, smaller, 27 firehouses.  Omaha, smaller, 25 firehouses.  I know the comparisons are base only on population and some of these departments cover more territory, but FDNY units seem much too thin.  It takes time for Bklyn units to get to SI fires.  It takes time for SI units to get to SI fires.

By the way, I think it used to be SOP not to have all three SI Bns operate at the same box.  Usually kept one SI Bn available to cover Island when other 2 Bns and D8 were operating at a multiple.  Maybe someone has an old assignment card.  I think Bn 42 used to be the third BC assigned to SI multiples on 2nd alarm.  Bn 43 used to be communications coordinator on 3rd alarm.

Your right "mack", BTW, Squad 1 was unavailable so Squad 252 traveled all the way across Brooklyn and halfway through Staten Island.

Squad 252 had a run of 18.22 miles, 38 minutes per Mapquest, if in quarters.  Maybe takes longer with traffic.  Responding on the all hands, they probably get in after the 3rd alarm companies and they are an all hands company.  Then it takes 38 minutes to return to quarters.  That's about 36 miles and 1 hour and 15 minutes of driving time for a run, maybe more with traffic.  Squad 1 would have been 13.5 miles away, 24 minutes by Mapquest, if available.  If the fire is in the South Shore, add another 5 or 6 miles each way for either company.  If Squad 252 responds to a fire in Tottenville, they have to drive about 20 miles to get there through most of Brooklyn and all of SI.

And once again nothing will happen until a major tragedy occurs. And furthur more until Bloomberg leaves office FDNY will add no more coverage, remember Bloomberg wants to take away coverage(Engines 161 and 157).
