Box 3375 is listed as "Crotona Ave 200' North of Fordham Rd". That is the approximate location of the old Fordham Hospital, long since gone.

What is now the primary entrance to the Botanical Gardens is relatively new (1970s?). Its published address is 2900 Southern Blvd. It is about a quarter mile north of Fordham Rd.

The main entrance to the Gardens used to be 2950 Southern Blvd, which is north of Bedford Park Blvd, across the street from the Metro North Botanical Gardens station. It is still an entrance, but not the primary one, replaced by 2900 S. Blvd some years ago.

To further complicate matters, the road that runs by both entrances has been known by 3 different names in my lifetime. In the 1950s, Southern Blvd ended at Fordham Rd and it then continued as Commercial Rd. all the way out to Allerton Ave. That portion was renamed to honor Dr. Kazimiroff in the 1960s. The Gardens reclaimed Southern Blvd when it opened its new entrance since visitors had no idea where the hell Commercial or Kazimiroff were.

So, when the Bronx street box numbers were laid down almost exactly a century ago, no number was assigned to 2900 SB as the entrance did not exist. The closest box # to the then main entrance to the Gardens at 2950 S.Blvd was Box 3512, Bedford Park Blvd at Webster Ave.

Methinks that is why the confusion as to which box # and companies to assign to this incident. If there was an actual Box # for 2900 Southern Blvd the assignment should be

38 37 56F

That would be one of only 2 boxes where E48 is assigned 3d due to 88 and/or 79.

I hope Atlas is reading this as he (or one of our other former dispatchers) might know what #s were assigned to the Botanical Gardens Class 3 boxes back in the day.

And I am a big NY Football Giants fan so I obviously have nothing better to do than write this as they are getting killed by the Raiders.

Over the years I remember a two-alarm brush fire in the gardens, but it was on the Bronx River Pkwy side. Other wise not too much fire activity.

There was a WNYF story in the 80's about rescuing a person stuck at the top of one of the greenhouses.

Atlas, the entrance you mention is no longer the main entrance. In fact it now has restricted access for vehicular traffic. 79/37 would have a tough time getting into and around the Gardens from there. It is now referred to as the Mosholu Entrance and primarily serves pedestrian traffic from the Metro North station.

The main entrance to the NYBG is now a half mile to the south at 2900 Southern Blvd, across the street from the Fordham University main campus parking lot. I have been there recently and that appears to be the main access point for any responding fire apparatus. It's about a dead heat distance from the quarters of both 79/37 and 88/38. 48/56 should be 3d due but the rundown for this incident does not reflect that.

I heard of a big job in the greenhouse of the NYBG some years ago where the flames inside the building reflected spectacularly thru the glass walls and roof. Were you around for that? Were you aware of any Class 3 boxes in the NYBG? There must have been some in the research building.
