Wow! I'm surprised that this didn't make the national news.
First due Engine 20 on Baldwin Road has a small isolated still alarm district comprised of the Hays/Lincoln Place areas across the Monongahela River in southeast Pittsburgh. I don't recall ever hearing them get a job.

All of their boxes were in the 3900 series. This one would be 3935 Interboro and Diller.
If you worked at 20 Engine:
-You would need a hobby to bring to work; say building a ship in a bottle or repairing watches.
-You would never relocate on a multiple,
-If you got a job, you were on your own. This fire is a long run for them, and every other company responding has to drive by their quarters.
However, they were near (but didn't respond to) some interesting places.
Just to the east in West Homestead is Mesta Machine Company. They made equipment found in every steel mill in the world.
The owner's wife, Pearl, was the Grande Dame of Washington, DC society in the 1960's.
And right next door was the US Steel Homestead Works- at one time the largest steel mill in the world...site of the 1892 Homestead Steel Strike...the birthplace of the Goldengate Bridge,... the modern United States Navy,...and the skyscrapers of Manhattan.
And of course provided the profits to build the mansions (now museums) of Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick on Fifth Avenue across the street from Central Park.
