Credit to Mike Legeros for all of this:
Rowan County working. [Eleven] firefighters were injured this evening at a house fire in Salisbury, after an explosion occurred during the early fire attack and while primary searches were underway.
EDIT: Updating at 9:31 p.m. with details from tonight's SFD press conference, link listed at bottom of posting. Per Fire Chief Bob Parnell:
Crews arrived within 4 1/2 minutes, found well-involved single-family, single-story dwelling, well-involved in the rear.
Crews started an offensive (interior) fire attack and primary search.
During that time--water had started flowing on the fire--something in the house exploded. The force of the explosion caused the outside walls to blow out, and also lifted the roof.
The explosion caused debris to both fall around and onto the firefighters.
Maydays were immediately called, rapid intervention team(s) were deployed, and the firefighters were removed from the structure [and the area of the blast].
Eleven firefighters were transported to local hospitals, some to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center in Salisbury, and some Atrium Health Cabarrus in Concord.
Eleven Salisbury FFs were transported and treated, plus one Spencer firefighter. (With 22 total firefighters on shift in Salisbury.)
None of the injuries are life threatening. Some were treated for contusions, concussions, and smoke inhalation. Some at Rowan Medical Center have already been released.
SFD chaplains are at both hospitals to provide assistance.
Mutual aid companies are assisting with city coverage, going to the hospital, and assisting at the scene.
Cause is under determination.
