Continued Rest in Peace to those who were lost that night. Continued thoughts and prayers for their families at home and on the job.
On that date I was a Fire Marshal and the CFM had changed our hours and our starting time was 0500 hours. Working in Queens base at Fort Totten, we had a window AC unit in the kitchen. All of a sudden there was a big wind gust that blew out the wood panels in the window to close the space around the unit. I thought to myself that was a very strong wind and not a good day to be fighting fire. Later that morning we learned of the death of the 3 FF's .
My Squad was ordered to escort the body of one member to the Funeral Home from the Coroner in the City. We had an escort from NYPD to the Nassau border we were then escorted by Nassau PD and we entered the HOV lane which wasn't finished at that time. We continued our journey to Suffolk we were then met by Suffolk PD and ended at the Lombardo Funeral Home. A day that I will never forget since we used to interchange with 170 and knew a lot of those guys in the Firehouse.

On December 18 , 1998 we lost three Brave members of our Department. In an early morning fire at Brooklyn box 5555 4080 17 Vandalia avenue .
Lt. Joseph Cavalieri – Age 42 – Ladder 170 – 15-year veteran
F/F James Bohan – Age 25 – Engine 262 ( Rot.) – 2-year veteran
F/F Christopher Bopp – Age 27 – Ladder 170 – 3-year veteran
These Brothers died while searching for elderly residents who they believed to be trapped .
Greater love hath no man than this , that he lay down his life for his friends

17 Vandalia Ave is directly behind the "Christian Cultural Center" on Flatlands Ave. The CCC has been the venue for many FDNY promotion and graduation ceremonies in recent years. The most recent LODD funeral for PFF Malveaux was held at the CCC, and the procession passed by 17 Vandalia coming and going.
