12/21/09-- Bronx Box 3563/5th Alarm

In photo 58, I see that Squad 41 is using the reserve Squad 800. I thought it was a reserve and not a spare or is there a new reserve rig?

It used to be manned by Engine Company 212 but the High Expansion Unit was disbanded along with Engine 212. It was basiclly a gaint fan that blew a "bubble-bath" like substance.

The IC probably needed the foam task force for the basement being heavily involved, the amount of contents in the building or post collapse.

Hi Ex was not disbanded with 212. It went to 259, then 262, but has been since removed from service. Any Hi Ex is carried by the foam units, but on a smaller scale.

Sorry FDNY150 I should of refrashed that, I didnt mean that they got disbanded at the same time I just meant that they were both disbanded.

Here's a photo of Hi Ex foam unit being used at a basement fire in Harlem, early 1980s.

If the chief was asking for Hi Ex Foam,(10-87) they get three foam carriers with their associated engine companies, an additional satellite with its associated engine, 2 foam coordinators. If the fire involves the basement, the IC may ask for Hi Ex Foam. This has happened a few times when you have a basement fire in a row of stores with large amounts of stock inside. (I mean, come on, this was a supermarket involved as well) Easier just to flood the basement with foam instead of peeing on it with handlines. E-238 with the Foam Tender would not respond because the tender does not carry Hi Ex.

Any request for regular foam(10-86) would get 2 foam rigs, 2 foam coordinators, 2 Purple K Units, satellite and the foam tender. All with the associated Engines.
PS, that was 52 Engine on the 4th. 82 Engine is on the 5th alarm according to the assignment card.

FDNY150 - the rundown shows four foam companies, and no Purple K units.  Why four foam units??

There was at least one purple k unit - on the audio tape posted by R1SmokeEater the dispatcher assigned E326 with the purple k unit - the audio tape is really good as it is edited and you only have to listen to the actual transmission of everything for only a couple of minutes - it's a good listen!
