75-2723 20 E Clark Pl. @ Jerome ave,D#6 reports fire in the basement of a 6 story 75x75 OMD. Also they have 4-10-45's, (2) are code 3's and (2) code 4's. can someone get the rundown, it should be interesting.

This should be an interesting rundown due to a 2nd alarmer at box 2934 on Walton a few blocks north. :

Here is what I could get from the Citywide archive tape:

This box was transmitted on air at 07:13.  The second alarm (Box 2934) went to a PWH at 07:06 with an incident duration of 50 minutes. Fire was placed under control by D7 at 07:19 - duration 1 hour and 3 minutes

The initial response to Box 2723 was 3 and 2 with B14 - E82 as the third Engine and L32 acting L59 as the second truck. L42 acting L27 requested directions to the box as they had no route cards. Disp told L42/27 to take Cross Bronx to Jerome Avenue and they would direct them in from there (which he did one turn at a time) An unidentified unit said they would be delayed into the box.

I found an assignment card (dated 1975) for Box 2722 which is at the other end of the block. Note that L56 was still with E42 back then.

"G-man", on the first alarm assignment from that run card, under Engines it has "42R" as the third due. Would you know what that "R" means if anything. I think it's the only Engine with an "R" after it. (I do remember when Ladder 56 was with Engine 42. I think it was supposed to be a temporary move while the floor was repaired at 42s house).

 "R" is for Reserve meaning Engine 42 is held in reserve and did not respond to the box. Back even before the start of the "War Years" the 3rd due engine was placed in "reserve" and on a 10-30 or 10-75 a Squad would respond. In this case Squad 5 which was then at E41 was assigned on the 2nd alarm. If you look at some of my other posts with old Harlem & Bronx assignment cards you will see an "R" next to the 3rd due engine and subsequently you'll also see a Squad assigned on the 2nd alarm. Ladder 56 was at Engine 42 from 8/10/68 to 8/12/81 when they moved up to E48.

In efd274's run down, the Bronx Dispatcher was able to route L42 over the air to the box. Wait till the city finishes dismantling the Bur. of Fire Communications, shuts down the rest of the COs and UCT takes over completely. What are the chances of that kind of help for a unit in the field happening. This is another good example why none of the borough COs should have ever been closed.

G-man "Thank You" for that info on the "R" after 42. I wasn't aware of that. (of course I remember the 10-30 signal). And Disp 51, you are sure right about the FIRE Dispatchers knowing their stuff. I hope we don't see those UCts taking over the fire dispatching. Not to put "all" the UCTs down, but there's sure been problems since that policy went into effect.

Yes NFD, that was supposed to be temporary but it became permanent. There was also some underlying reason for the permanent move.

I think TL54 acting TL44 got in 1st due...??????  went to work and guys were talking about how there was 1 truck (54) on scene for a little bit.. The disp told them to take it in from the cross bronx as well as L42 acting L27..
