**{ FDNY BOX 2699 ~ BRONX }**~**{ FDNY BATTLING A FAST MOVING 2ND ALARM HIGH RISE FIRE, ON THE 20TH FLOOR OF A MULTIPLE DWELLING WITH EXTENSION TO THE FLOOR ABOVE, ON LAFAYETTE AVENUE IN THE SOUNDVIEW AREA OF THE BRONX IN NEW YORK CITY }**…..

This job and the accompanying training bulletin issued by Training/safety and the footage provided by Majesterium provide for many training opportunities, especially for non departments that don’t encounter these types of fires.

1. The members did an excellent job here. Not many departments can get 4 lines in service inside a high rise bldg that quickly. It’s all about the manpower which leads to # 2:
2. Summon additional resources immediately- high rise operations are manpower sponges. In many departments this would have easily gone to 4 or five alarms. The first due BC did just that immediately upon arrival
3. Are your chauffeurs prepared to handle the hydraulics? Here the operation is : pumping 200 feet of 3.5” to FD connection, lifting the water 21 stories up, flowing 1000 GPM (4 lines) , and pumping 4-5 lengths laterally. This results in a pump discharge pressure of about 245. ( 34+25+105+31+50). This is well within the operating parameters of the 2000 GPM pump and the working pressures of the hoses. If you are operating a 2 stage pump are you gonna pump in pressure or volume. Also remember that as you elevate the discharge pressures above 150 you lose pump capacity. Pumps GPM capacity rates at 150 psi. 70% at 200 psi and 50% at 250psi. But those numbers are determined from drafting water - not a pressurized source This a 2000 GPM pumper pumping 250 psi would only produce. 1400 GPM from a draft. The 1000 GPM pumps used in the 70’s and 80’s might have been pushed to their limit in this scenario. But in this scenario coming off a pressurized hydrant and flowing 1000 GPM was easy work for 96 engine. However,
4. The 4 lines inside the building are being supplied by a single 3.5” supply line. If that line bursts or separates from a coupling…….. always get two lines into the FD connection asap. Preferably from a second engine. It’s your insurance policy for the members operating inside.

Solid work at this job and a wealth of opportunities to reinforce high rise operations.

FDNY policy is to operate in "pressure" mode when supplying a system.

Wonder if one "volume" pumper and one "pressure" pumper would complement each other in a situation like this? Maybe if there was a second, separate Siamese, correction FDC.

well in theory could 1 engine hook up to 1 side of the FDC and another to the other side, both pumping in Pressure & Volume Mode?

Yes correct. Throwing that out there for all around country who don’t get to do these ops too often. Yes the two engines pumping into a FD connection with one pumping volume and one pumping pressure is very common for departments that have 40-50+ story buildings and do not have high pressure pumpers like FDNY.

I have also seen departments using 4” and 5” LDH hose to supply an FD connection. Unless the hose is special high pressure LDH hose , the maximum working pressure is typically 185psi with a burst of 250 psi. Cutting corners can come back to bite you in the ass. The FDNY high pressure hoses are red in color and double jacketed
