About three blocks around the corner at 404 Tompkins Avenue the Teddy Bear was born in 1902. The owner of a candy store there was intrigued by the hunting story of Teddy Roosevelt who refused to shoot a tied up bear by a guide in Mississippi and created a toy bear. It was so successful that he ditched the candy store and founded the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company which became the largest doll manufacturer in the United States.

Of interest, Eastern European Jewish immigrants in the Lower East Side also founded Hasbro, Mattel, and Lionel toy companies.
