Home Box for E274 and right across the street from where kfd and I grew up (153-12).  We had another fire on the block at 153-26 about a year or so ago.

When I was a kid, my neighbor worked at the hardware store across from 274. I Forget the name of the place.

No hardware store across from 274.  There was a canning factory.  Hardware store might be Beplat's at Roosevelt Avenue and 150 Street,  or Tedesco's at 153 Street and Northern Blvd.

Interesting little story! Look at a picture of the bay window in the front of the house shown in the other posts.  I remember that front first floor window was a series of what they called jealosie (sp?) windows.  In early October of 1965 one of the NY Mets (Bobby Klaus - second baseman who used to rent a house on the block) started playing in our touch football game on the block when he got home from his job with Rheingold beer (most ball players needed off season jobs in those days).  First day he played with us he shanked a punt right though that window - he was cool about it and immediately offered to pay for the window - and the offer was accepted ;)

Bobby Klaus got traded in early 1966 to the Philadelphia Phillies. He now lives in San Diego.  His older brother Billy was an infielder with the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles in the 1950's.  Bobby was a really nice guy and took me to a Jets game that Fall against Houston (52-14 Jets) and I sat in the press box with him next to Miss Rheingold.  At 17 that was pretty awesome!!

The descendant of Beplat's hardware is called Jere's (Jere was a Manager at Beplat's and essentially ran the front end) Jere's is located on the LIE W/B Service Rd on the corner of Fresh Meadow Lane (just west of Utopia Pkwy).

Right around the corner from St Mary's Cemetery and a few blocks from E299/TL152

Today's fire was directly across the street from the fire last year.

I believe the fire you are talking about was the one at 153-26 which was primarily an exterior fire in the siding  with some slight interior extension. Most of these homes on the block are 2 family homes. Ironically enough, Bobby Klaus rented the first floor of 153-26 41st Ave. Can't make this stuff up!! ;)

This question is for either brother  efd 274  or kfd 274.    After reading your comments  I must assume that 273/129 & 274 are not far apart.  I went to  a doctor on 41 ave off union. I saw the quarters of 273 / 129 on the hill as I was walking to the doctors office. I think the address I went to was 142 42

0.9 miles or 4 minutes by car per google ;)

You will notice many of the Queens companies were located along/or virtually adjacent to the LIRR Port Washington line because they were established when Queens was pretty much farm country.

Look at the location of the following
E289/138
273/129
274
320/167
306

Yes he did - that was his first location - I remember that Texaco Station (actually pumped gas there in 1966 filling in for my friend a couple of times - back when you didn't have to pump your own gas) as well as Wetsons and the King Kullen

....Jeres original store was located on Northern  ...it was a lot smaller than the present location but it had almost everything you could want.....the gas station has been gone for many years & the lot was vacant for just as many.....Jeres kids Sons & Daughter who worked as kids in the No. blvd store now run the LIE location which is in the old WTFM radio station bldg which you can see off the westbound LIE just past Utopia Pkwy.

I remember WTFM well. They played an "easy listening" format. The FCC gave them a Lake Success location so the "Legal I.D." was........This is WTFM, Lake Success, New York.

Yes,  when he left Beplat,  he went to 196th Street and established Jere's.  Later moved to the LIE off Francis Lewis

There weren't many autos and no highways then so the towns and villages were located around the train stops. In the Bronx and Brooklyn it was near trolley and subway lines. ;) On Staten Island it was along the shores where all the industry was located.
