https://hiddenwatersblog.wordpress.com/2016/05/19/strack-pond-queens/      ......I remember the 2 original ponds at this site..... 1 large & 1 smaller & not as deep a dirt trench ran from one to the other so they remained at the same surface level but the larger one was deeper......they were full of fish..frogs... turtles etc...people came from all around to fish in the Summer & ice skate in the Winter ......they were in a deep depression so rain water kept them full.....they were almost behind the Queens Dispatchers Office which was South of the Ponds at Park Lane South & Wooodhaven Blvd ......to the North side was the Carousel & the Suefert Band Shell.....in the late '50/ early '60s it was decided to drain them & build a ball field (even though Victory Field was just on the other side of Woodhaven Blvd).....draining them was a major project entailing installing a large sewer line in a trench that ran down the middle of Park Lane South eastward for blocks were it met with an existing sewer line.....the project took quite awhile to complete .....the area being in a gully surrounded by hills was very difficult to maintain dry & by the early '2000s the Ball Field was excavated & the area was allowed to become a pond again & named after the First Woodhaven resident to be KIA in Vietnam. Winter has taken it's toll in the most horrific & tragic of ways, Condolences to the family, and all who loved him.
