Bronx All-Hands for Box 4783, 1975 Sedgwick Ave. Fire in kitchen on 2nd floor of a 5 storey OMD. @ 05:56hrs

At a guess;

E43 E75 E95 E48

L59 L33

BN 19

L36 FAST

SQ61

R3

Not to get into box war but E-81 is the 3rd engine on that particular box a straight run on bailey  down to sedgwick ave. And for the record E-95 and L-36 do come over the "bridge " as you say. They are 2nd due into marble hill area of the bronx and a few other locations. Also on 2nd alarms they respond into the bronx via the fordham road bridge.

jarrod,

mac's got it right. 81 is 3rd due at 4783 and he would know. 95 is probably 4th due. 95 does cross the bridge into Marble Hill 2d or 3d due.

The response to this area of the Bronx changed a bit when E48 moved south two blocks on Webster Ave back in the 1980's. 48 used to go 3d due to the Harlem River via Fordham Rd and also south along Sedgwick Ave to 179th St. 81 and 95 were next in, but it flipped after 48 moved.  Just a few blocks changes things and makes a big difference in response pattern. E42 has a lot of turns to negotiate to get there but picks up south of 179 st.

They do not come over the 207th St bridge until the 2nd alarm.

When listening in on the live radio, E95 and L36 are often heard switching frequencies, from Man to bronx and then back again, responding on runs in the Bronx.

I also believe the same goes for E69/L28 and E59/L30.

Jarrod,

That usually happens when 95/36 go north to Marble Hill or Riverdale, where they are 2d, 3d, (or 4th due on a 10-75) at many boxes.

The 207th Street Bridge is east of 95/36; they cross it on the first alarm only if one or more of E's 43,75, 81, 48, (and maybe 79 and 42) and the corresponding ladder companies are unavailable for a run in the Fordham Hill, Kingsbridge, or Morris Heights sections of the Bronx.

By the way,"Kingsbridge" refers to your King, from the days prior to the American Revolution, when there actually was a bridge authorized by the British Crown used to travel to parts north, outside of New York City.

Same goes for 59/30, 93/45, and 35/14, they rarely respond to the Bronx before 4th due unless it's a highway box.  69/28 doesn't seem to get that many runs in the Bronx; usually when they switch over it seems to be on relocation!

Not true about Bronx companies going to Manhattan though.  81/46 (and by extension 37) are 2nd and 3rd due to some Inwood boxes, and 83/29 are 1st due to The Rock.

As for 69/28 and 59/30, they come east from Harlem across the Madison Avenue and Macombs Dam Bridge on the first alarm to several boxes just east of the Harlem River in the Bronx. They are the closest units to arrive at those boxes, regardless of the fact they are located in Manhattan.

93/45 do the same across the Highbridge into the University Heights section of the Bronx.

Ditto 35/14 (and the late departed Engine 36) in the very southern parts of the Mott Haven section.

You will hear Bronx units (83,68,43,81,52) located on the geographic perimeter of the borough doing the same in reverse.

Your interest in the FDNY "from across the pond" is appreciated.

Good Stuff!

Before 1968 there was no L55, and the Department did not normally assign units responding into other boroughs but the War Years changed all that. Exceptions were made where absolutely necessary, like Highbridge and Kingsbridge/Marble Hill.

71's move to the new house changed things, as in E48's move.

Wasn't E71 first due at Yankee Stadium before their move to Melrose Ave? Straight run west on 161 st.

You're right, I remember E71 having a straight shot to Yankee Stadium. I'm 58 and practically grew up right in front of E60/L17/BC14. L17 used to be 1st Due up to 156th St. and 2nd Due up to 158th St. west of 3rd Ave. Before 1966 Ladder 17 was a "Key Company" meaning that they didn't relocate and were always covered usually by L19, 28 & 43.

Switching frequencies is up to individual officer working, when you acknowledge response the borough you are responding to receives it, so no need to tell them you are responding. E81/L46 often travel into Inwood 2nd due and most times I do not say anything on Manhattan Radio unless necessary. E-81 goes pretty far into North Manhattan on boxes.

What war years are you talking about? Viet Nam or WW 2. Big difference.

The "War Years" describes roughly the time between the late 1960's to give or take 1980 (some say into the 90s), when there was a massive spike in fire activity Citywide which, combined with a fiscal crisis, made for the busiest years in FDNY history.  It has nothing to do with any actual war.
