920 box was the call to welfare Island for training. There you would be reevaluated on your training knowledge. Eventually they changed it where they would come to Quarters and evaluate the Company. And then it actually became a training venue which was a lot more helpful. I was still a Proby when they came to our house and they left me alone because the figured training was still fresh in my mind. If I remember correctly it was
9-9-5or 7-920-and then Co. No. 1-7-6. It was probably the quietest time in the Firehouse when that 9-9-920 came in, hoping it wasn't for you.

Tony you are absolutely right, I remember it well. Everyone had their fingers crossed, because it wasn’t a teaching time, it was a gotcha thing. You stepped off with the wrong foot etc. The more gigs you receive the company could be in trouble and pay for it down the road.

Yep I was a new proby when two Captains came to the house for an ‘evaluation’. I thought I was going to be the one picked to answer their questions but to my surprise they asked our most senior member a few questions.
We still had a wooden truss ladder and they asked him how he would tie it up to hoist it. I looked cross eyed as he started telling them about knots here and there. When he was done one of the Captains asked him where he learned that!
After explaining about going to Ladder school in Manhattan (forgot the Company where Ladder school was) they laughed and told him about the new procedure. After we all sat down to a great lunch and storytelling. It was actually a good day they went with us on a few runs and we all learned what was coming down the pipe.

After the Evaluators started coming to Units to do the Evaluations with the Unit still remaining In Service there were 2 CPTs riding with a certain busy BKLYN Truck...the Truck was having an off & on water fight with a nearby ENG Co. .......coming back from a Run each CPT was sitting in the jump seat on either side of the motor on the Rig ......laying in wait on a corner the ENG blasted the Truck with Booster Water thru their Stang entirely soaking the 2 CPTs who were all dressed in Uniform's.

Looks like Box 920 is still being used for Welfare Island. But now it can go to a 10-77.

If memory serves me correctly, 920 was a Manhattan box. That would make the preliminary signal 66 instead of 99.

We are talking 69-70's when welfare Island was the training center and it was in Long Island City located in Queens. Now it's called Roosevelt Island.
