Coming in late on this thread , but i ask the forum . Does anyone know who has oversite of these Junksites in the City? Again seems like working on a hazardous dump , with a torch is just trouble and dangerous. Dont want to lay blame , but if a firefighter is injured at a site like this , who is ultimitely responsible ? Just way too many of these unregulated yards all over the city. Not the first time ..

With the ever-increasing popularity of Drone Vid.s from Free-lancers, Doesn't it Make Sense for
FDNY to begin Testing Application of this New Tech., rather than having to go through the whole
process of identifying an Aviation-Observation Trained Btn. Chief, dispatching that Chief to Floydd Bennett Field to rendezvous with an NYPD Chopper, then respond to the Scene and establish Comm.s with IC for Report ?

Notably heavy odor of smoke in the vicinity of 23rd and 9th Avenue in Manhattan.  BN-7 companies are being kept very busy with odor-of-smoke runs tonight, all attributable to the Brooklyn 4th.  I've smelled smoke from Brooklyn and even Queens multiple alarms before, but nothing like this.  Does anyone know if Hudson County, NJ FD's are getting similar runs?  I wouldn't be surprised if the smoke gets that far west.

Hoboken has already gotten a few calls for smoke. The entire southeast corner of Hoboken smells like smoke, even up onto the Stevens campus. I can't speak for any other departments though.

My alma mater, how that place has changed!

The fellow who had the drone at the 10-60 was on one of the news shows. He's had a drone for several years &

gives classes in how to operate them.The one he was using cost around $1,800.00 & he got it at B&* in

Manhattan

I've also mentioned the use of this technology several times and have gotten very little feedback except from some naysayers who don't like the idea.  It's certainly much more cost-effective and can be deployed much more rapidly than the present use of NYPD helicopters.  It could easily be carried in one of the Chief Vehicles and could be deployed by the driver.  The cost is certainly at such a level that it wouldn't be cost prohibitive if you look at me amount of money they spend on other things that are probably used far less!  The biggest advantage I see is that they could be put into use very rapidly near the onset of an incident and could help immensely in the initial attack planning.  The only thing they can't do that a helicopter can is carrying a Bambi bucket and that really is done very often or effectively in New York city.

I can defiantly see this as being a useful tool to have, personally I think there might be some hesitation at the time , mainly waiting to see what the FAA does about them with regulations and what not. For what they cost I wouldn't be surprised to see them in every battalion car in a few years. To try them out I would buy a couple and put one in the Rescue Battalion vehicle, one in the Hazmat Battalion vehicle and maybe on the Command Tactical Vehicles. They can get into spots a lot tighter than a NYPD Helicopter can, they can be redeployed quicker all you have to do is throw a new battery in it no returning to Floyd Bennett Field for fuel. I would think that drones would be extremely useful in Hazmat, collapse and even a normal 10-75. To be able to get something in close in a Hazmat or Collapse Operation to identify potential hazards without committing members can be essential to firefighter safety in the future. Even on a normal 10-75 it can be very useful, they can check out the roof, give the I/C a 360 view with out leaving the command post. I would certainly be for at least trying them out, for what they cost, a lot more money has been waisted on Equiptment and studies that are worthless or did not work out. The military has had great success using them for surveillance, check out the RQ-11 although it is not a helicopter style it has color video as well has having infrared night vision built into the unit. Point being they can develop a platform tailored to there needs, maybe there even is something out there already that would work for them. The drones that the tv people and the free lancers use generally just have a handheld camera that they mounted on it. If they had a small drone that had color video as well as inferred / night vision it could aide in search and rescue in the woods, identifying hot spots at large scale fires after the main body of fire has been knocked down and to potentially find a victim buried in the rubble of a collapse. There are many possibilities that a drone platform could be set up
