FC: Progress report for unusual occurance All-Hands Box 1465, adjacent to the address 100 E 122 st, between Park Ave and Lexington Ave, at this time Division 3, DC Hodgkins reports: the trench collapse at a construction site with 1 victim buried up to his waist, at this time the ConEd vacuum truck is in the process of clearing debris, we have a Rescue Medic in the trench tending to the victim, in the process of extrication.

FC: Progress report for unusual occurance All-Hands Box 1465, using the address adjacent to 100 E 122 st, between Park Ave and Lexington Ave, we had a trench collapse at a construction site with one worker trapped up, at this time DAC Seelig, Car 11, reports: they've stopped using the ConEd vacuum truck to remove debris, and units are now hand digging to assist with extrication.  The patient is alert and orientated at this time, incident remains Doubtful Will Hold.

Ray - obviously I wasn't clear - I know FDNY was using shoring etc. - I was referring to the contractor's operation that precipitated the incident - they didn't have the trench properly sheeted or shored which accounted for the collapse.  Apparently, these construction workers did not have confined space entry training or ignored proper practices.

From some of the news reports, I'm not sure the trench was deliberately dug.  Of course, you can't believe 80% of what TV reporters say, but they inferred that the trench "just appeared", like a sink hole, and grabbed the worker.  Tough to install shoring in a situation like that (IF that is what happened).
 
Properly designed and installed sheeting (normally steel), shoring (often wood) or the metal box (most large pipe installations use this) is generally required
