According to the New London newspaper (The Day), first arriving units found heavy fire and smoke at 28 Rogers Street. There were reports of explosions within the building, a 2 1/2 story frame which was vacant. Squatters have been known to use the building. A second alarm was transmitted and a ladder company responded from Waterford.
