That is right on the edge of the City Line.

Was Mt Vernon called for this incident? If so, are their companies closer?

Think about the distances the FDNY has to travel to these boxes. E62, L32 FAST...two miles?

If the workload continues up in that part of the Bronx, there will have to be additional companies emplaced.

L56 to E97?

46/27 to Wakefield, Edenwald, or Eastchester??

I don't think so , 56 gets enough work where they are , 62 & 32 can make it to Woodlawn or Wakefield in about 2-4 minutes , There's 38 & 51 that are third due to the box , Mount Vernon units don't need to be dispatched to this , It's in the Bronx , The fire obviously wasn't that bad if they had it under control in a matter of minutes.
 
does E97 have room for a truck in qtrs?  if a bronx truck were to be moved there who might it be? are there a few slower trucks that could be moved there becasue of increased workload? instead of closing a house maybe they might move them instead right? have heard rumor of 27 truck moving in with E42 if they close E46.

Yes there is Room for A truck in 97's quarters but Than where would they put the thawing unit ? No i don't think 46 is closing anytime soon.

Actually, 38/51 are 2d due to Box 3890.

My question was, simply, did anyone from MT Vernon, perhaps residing across the street beyond the City Line,  call the MVFD. I am not familiar with the location of MVFD units. If called, perhaps they got in there before FDNY units.

The box assignment for 3890 is

63/39    who are 1.25 miles away.
39/51      "      "  2.25    "      "
62/32      "      "  2.6    "      "   

If you applied those street mileages to Box 3370, Fordham Road at Webster Ave, the first alarm assignment would look something like this:

46  90  92  52        27 41  44FAST

which are second , third and fourth alarm companies actually.

Get the point? There ain't enough companies where the work is these days.


As to 62/32 getting to Woodlawn/Wakefield in 2-4 minutes....have you ever been to the Bronx?

The fire house on Astor Avenue was built for E97 and L32 to serve Pelham Gardens in 1929. After a few years, the FDNY realized that L32 was of more use back at E62 and it returned to White Plains Road.

E97's house is a double house of the same design  as E38, E89 and a lot of others of the era. The 7th Division spare ladder apparatus was parked there for decades of the last century.

L56 is a great and busy company. It was created to bolster the force during the War Years, initially at E42. It then moved into E48's new house in anticipation of the arson moving above Fordham Road into Bedford Park (as was Battalion 27's move from E82  to E79). That arson never happened.

L's 33, 37, and 38 could serve University Heights, Bedford Park, Belmont, and Fordham quite well, as they did for most of the 20th Century. L56 could ride in and save the Northeast Bronx, as is their history.

I'm just throwing out ideas. Take none of it seriously...unless you have better ones.

 
A friend of mine who spent his career in E94 had told me back in the 90's that there was a strong rumor that L48 would be moved up to E63 on E 233 St since the opposition in Woodlawn wouldn't let them move L39 over to E63. Would that move possibly be reconsidered again to move L48 to E97 since L48's numbers are fairly low and could be easily absorbed by ladders 42, 31, 54 and 47 as oppossed to moving L56 which has higher job numbers than L48?

That's a good point Frank. "G-man" also has a point with Ladder 29. And I have to agree with "3511" also. That north Bronx has certainly picked up over the years. Would you ever think we'd be talking like this 25 or so years ago ?
 
Let's not give them any suggestion's.....if they need more Fire protection in an area (as they do in many areas of NYC ) let them open new Companies i realize we all like to voice our ideas which many times make sense however those in a higher position also read these ideas...... the FDNY has been downsized way too much over the years already.   
 
Good point Chief. E97 is down near Pelham Pkwy a good bit south of the area in question in this post. A new firehouse further northeast is the answer but one the city does not want to give.

  You are absolutely right there Chief. Actually I wouldn't want a ladder company taken away from me if I lived in the response area of Ladder 29 or Ladder 48. And I also wouldn't want somebody from outside the city I live in telling "the higher ups" how to move the few fire companies that are left around. Neither would the people who depend on them now.

  Chief, thanks for pointing that out. It's not my job, and I'm sure you wouldn't be telling my chief how to move companies around. "I think I learned a little lesson here".

I live in the Bronx , Right on the Border of Yonkers & The Bronx , 63 , 62 , 39 & 32 drive past my house all the Time that's where I got my video that I Posted earlier , Of 32 Truck responding as the FAST Truck , I do not think that MVFD responded I have a friend who is A Mount Vernon Buff , I asked him he said no , I definitely agree with your Fact about Box 3370 , Your right , But I have a Question for you guys , Do you guys think that there is any possibility that Ladder 39 might move back to Woodlawn ? They get here quite fast but Why is there a need for an EMS Station ? Couldn't they just be Stationed at Montefiore North ? Like I believe EMS Battalion 20 is Stationed at Jacobi. I think that Brand new house would be better for Ladder 39.


 
That EMS station is Bn. 27, it was supposed to go in the Kingsbridge area to cover Kingsbridge and Riverdale however due to politics a location was never found in that area. A station was started at West 230 and Tibbett but never finished due to soil issues and the fact that there are 3 schools on same block, this builidng made it to a steel skeleton but was torn down. Now used as parking lot for teachers cars. No site was deemed available and the Ladder 39 quarters was torn down to make way for new EMS station. There is a need for this EMS station but not at its present location, it is a distance from the area it covers. 
 
I think that was part of the City's deal with residents of Woodlawn...we'll take your ladder truck but give you an EMS outpost.
