Interesting response because a couple of the Special Units (Purple K 326 by E315 and Decon 251 by E297) had to be brought to the scene by their back-up engine companies.

Interesting that the initial call was from E313 to Queens for a verbal on a car fire at this location - got more than they originally bargained for. News update as follows:

Massive Fire In Queens
Con Edison Substation Goes Up In
Flames

Queens - The fire at an electrical substation in the Douglas section of Queens is out. More than 130 firefighters battled massive flames and smoke for several hours.

The fire broke out at around 8 a.m. at 244th Street and Northern Boulevard. No one was injured.

Fire crews managed to keep the flames fom spreading. The fire was under control a few hours later.

A Con Edison official says there were no reports of power outages.

Northern Boulevard was closed in both directions through Douglaston.

A substation transfers power to the surrounding homes and businesses.

It's not clear what sparked the fire.

Interesting also for some other reasons as well - not often that you see all of the following units on a box:
1 Foam Response
2 HazMat Unit
3 Decon Unit Task Force

In addition  TL operation using foam and 4 multiversals were put into operation -several Towers were also used to protect exposures

Hope Lou Minutoli or someone else puts pictures up on this.

Most of the news outlets have video up on their sites.

Thanks for the EMS response. Those guys are out there too. Quick Review; "53H" is a Haz-Tac Ambulance, Correct ?  "53Y" is a Paramedic Unit (2 Medics),  And what is "5E" ?

Lou gets around, doesn't he?

It's also interesting to note that there were at least 2 Mack CFs at this incident.  One had the markings of Foam260 and one bore the FDNY designation MF8706 (Foam 294???).  I wonder how long it's been since there were 2 CFs on a fire scene in NY?

Nice shots by Lou as usual - noticed L167 with the aerial up - originally assigned as FAST truck but obviously put to work - some good photos of E274 and their Hazmat Unit (still looks like a bread truck) also - so I'm a little partial to 274.

Not to sure, got it from the archive audio, they stated 5 Eddie has been special called in. Sounds like a bus from lower Manhattan but don't know why they would go.

THANK YOU--EFD for a GREAT run down. As always good work

I think car 5E is some kind of supervisor as I've heard this unit on citywide a few times. There is no 5th battalion.

Thanks guys on the answer about EMS Car 5E. I did check that site out but, didn"t see "5E" as in Eddie. I assume its an EMS Chief that takes home a little bigger pay check than the average EMT working FDNY/EMS. Kind of like comparing "Johnd248"s check with my paycheck. And for those who don"t know, "johnd248 lives in one of Cts Richest Communities, while I live in one of the poorest. "Ain"t that right John" ! ! !
