Most responses for fire get the standard 3engines and 2trucks plus the Chief, if the box is a job the rest of the units are sent after signal is given so giving the Chief the id of the 4 th engine is good.Sometimes a box will get loaded up due to quantity and quality of calls so dispatcher will give that to responding units and inform chief of additional units assigned.

4th engine and FAST Company are announced over the air to the IC so he can have an easier way of accomplishing command and control of the incident.
Its usually backed up by the boss of said companies reporting to the IC and stating face to face ?Im your 4th engine or Im your FAST Truck?
The IC can be working a tour in unfamiliar territory and may not automatically know that so and so engine or so and so truck are the balance of his signal 7-5 assignment. He has a lot on his mind. This helps things run more smoothly.
