"On Monday afternoon, FDNY Marine Company 6 rescued a person in distress from the East River near Kent Avenue and South 9th Street in Brooklyn.
At approximately 3:12 p.m., Marine 6 responded to reports of a person in the water and immediately got underway aboard the fireboat Feehan. Upon arrival, members located the victim struggling in a swift-moving current and repeatedly going beneath the surface.
Firefighter Norman Bennett, assigned as the rescue swimmer, quickly entered the water while tethered to Firefighter Daniel Bergen, who served as the backup rescuer. Maintaining visual contact with the victim, members deployed the rescue swimmer within seconds of arriving on scene.
Firefighter Bennett was able to reach and secure the victim as Firefighter Bergen and Wiper Vega assisted in bringing both safely aboard the vessel.
Recognizing the need for immediate medical care, Marine 6 maneuvered the vessel alongside a nearby ferry terminal, where members gained access to the pier and transferred the victim to awaiting FDNY EMS personnel.
The FDNY commends the quick action, coordination, and professionalism of the members of Marine Company 6, whose efforts brought this incident to a successful outcome."
