If it is the same as the original MM it breaks one 2 1/2 into three 1 3/4 lines close to the point of operation.....originally designed to be placed on a lower floor of an "H" type bldg w/a heavy cockloft fire & supplied by a 2 1/2 stretched up the outside of the bldg to a lower floor but would work good at something like this brush Fire.

Why are they carried by a BC and/or a DC rather than by the Satellites?
They are lightweight & small enough to fit in a milk crate so it is no problem having them in several Chiefs Rigs & getting them on the scene earlier.....they were a hot item years ago when there were more  Fires involving "H" types .....Ret BC Larry H. then an Officer in ENG*42 did a lot of research & experimentation w/their use....there was a WNYF article on it (also sometime referred to as a "Water Thief") .....also maybe called a "Maverick Hydrant" ?

the appliance that I use to work with that was called a Water Thief and a 2 1/2 inlet with a 2 1/2 and 2, 1 1/2 outlets. It was called a thief because you still maintain the 2 1/2 line while adding an additional 2 lines to it.

I remember it w/a reducer to 1 1/2 on the 2 1/2 outlet plus two 1 1/2 angled forward on the sides so i think it is the same piece of equipment.....maybe someone more savy can post the WNYF article.....here is manufacturers photo ad....  http://www.akronbrass.com/valves/water-thief
