Interesting also how you can see a change in philosophy in the overall deployment of apparatus on the assignment card  - a Queens Co, E312 relocates to E 60 on a 2nd alarm>

Yes, that was done because E53 was a very busy East Harlem unit. Another interesting point is that E73/L42 were almost always covered by another complete neighboring firehouse. Example: E83/L29 when the run was north, E50/L19 when it was east and E94/L48 when south or west. When a run was further north and E83 was not available because they relocated to E64 then E35 would cover E73.

I noticed on the card, the "pen" change with E82 replacing E85??

Does anyone know why this was done, considering the card was from 1969, E85 was still quatered with E82 for another few years and if memory serves correct E85 "handled" that side of Southern Blvd??

On this card it's actually E82 & E83 swapping places (3rd due on the 1st and 1st due on the 2nd), in those days E85 wasn't even on the assignment cards for multiple alarms. I have some cards that have E85 replacing E82 and E82 would then not respond on multiples and other companies no longer had to relocate to E82. Notice that L55 which had been in service since 1968 wasn't on the card either. The card was issued on August 10, 1968 exactly one year after Engines 41-2 and 46-2 were organized.

GMan - you should write a book,  just don't forget the pictures. All of this knowledge should not be lost to future generations

I'm just passing on things I've learned to some here who appreciate it just like it was done for me. My mentor was a little old buff named Jimmy Ginty who had been a buff at Ladder 17 since before the turn of the century. He passed on little pieces of real old FDNY history to me. Things like where and how the horses were tied up and other tales of the past. There's a photo of him in E60/L17/BC14 "Green Berets" website: http://www.fdnygreenberets.com/e60l17_025.htm

Thank You Gman for sharing that picture of your old buff buddy Jimmy Ginty. I hope that somehow, Jimmy knows that what he taught you a long time ago, we are all still reaping the benefits of. Thank You Gman, and where ever you are, "Thank You Jimmy".
