Bronx All-hands 2099 Webster Avenue at E180 street. @ 15:35.

As i dont have a Box number, here is my guess at companies;

E48 E75 E88 E42

L56 L38

SQ61

R3

Batt 19

L33 FAST

E46

:D ;D ::)

i was looking on the 'Mapbuilder' map of FDNY Firehouses, and compared it with the location of the fire, and geographically E75 looks closer by far than E46, but i assume that its done on how fast the apparatus can actually arrive, with some companies having a straight run to the box, even though they are further away.

Nice 1st due job. Real sh*t building. Mostly vacant apartments. Fire blowing out the 1st floor rear windows. Good smoke condition above. As usual a nice job by all involved.

  A straight line of distance doesn't always work in the Bronx because there are hills and ridges that run north and south. They impede the units traveling east & west. One of those ridges runs along west of Webster Ave. from the 160's to Gun Hill Rd. so everything west of Webster is at a higher elevation up to Grand Concourse. The Concourse is a wide boulevard and on some cross streets you can't drive across because it has divided traffic lanes. On main cross streets like 167th, 170th, Tremont, Burnside, Fordham Rd., Kingsbridge Rd. and Bedford Park Blvd. there are underpasses for crosstown traffic. West of Grand Concourse there's another valley running the along Jerome Ave. and west of Jerome are the Highbridge and University Hts. ridges that peak at University Ave. (aka: M.L.K. Blvd) that are also difficult to travel east & west. In fact, some of those cross Streets like E. 168th St. do not go straight through and have only pedestrian stairways. For instance, Clay, Findlay, Teller, and College Avenues are uphill from Webster as are Tiebout, Valentine, Ryer and Anthony Avenues.

As an old buff of DaBronx, I can tell you looking at a map is very deceiving. Just as was explained, what looks like a straight shot could turn out completely different when taking in a job. Studying a map is not the answer. Only traveling through the streets over and over is the way to learn the best route. In fact, I"ll probadly print this page because in the above post, getting around was explained so well. Yes, forty years of buffing the area, and I"m still learning a few traveling tips. Thanks guy.

I see, its not all as staright foreward as it looks!!

Sometime this year i am going to visit the bronx, and spend some time looking around, with hopefully some guidance from the local firehouses, as i know some areas of the bronx, should not be walked around alone!!!

Its also been pointed out that i need to put the month before the day on the dates wehn i post fires, sorry guys!!

I tried doing it a couple of times but totally confused myself, i will endeavour to post the dates month first then the day!!  ::)

I will also leave the response to the boxes to those more in the know than i am.

regards

Jarrod
