"On Monday, July 12, FDNY Lietuenant McCarvill, Firefighters Dontis, Murphy, Fok, and Edwards from Engine 10, and Captain Bendix, Firefighters Sansonetti, Pickering, Burdzy, O’Sullivan, and Poueriet, from Ladder 10 responded to a call for a person in the water at Pier A, 22 Battery Place in Manhattan. Upon arrival, units made contact with FDNY EMTs Mark Tome and Matthew Millet from Station 4, and NYPD who were already operating on the scene. The individual in the water was approximately 12 feet down from the pier, clinging to a buoy. An NYPD officer was able to toss a life-saving ring to the patient and secure it to the pier, stabilizing the patient in the water. Members of Ladder 10 removed a 20 foot straight ladder from the rig and lowered it into the water. Members then fastened the ladder to the pier to secure a safe ascent out of the water. Firefighter Pickering descended the ladder into the water where he swam 10 feet through rough currents, to reach the patient. Once contact was made, FF Pickering was able to guide the individual over to the ladder and assist with ascent. Firefighters Sansonetti and Burdzy worked together to pull the patient up and over the ladder onto the pier. Once on the pier, FDNY EMTs Tome and Millet were able to provide necessary medical care and transport the patient to a local hospital in stable condition."
