On Tuesday, July 13, FDNY members from Rescue 3, Ladder 49 and Ladder 45 received a call for a person in the water. Upon arrival, units were waved to the Harlem River where they observed an individual swiftly drifting south. Reports came in that currents were very strong. The three companies each deployed a diver into the water at High Bridge. Members engaged with the individual until Marine 4 arrived and were able to pull the person onto the boat. Marine 4 then made their way to shore and transferred the patient to FDNY EMTs Kudrashov and Leung from Station 13 who performed necessary medical care. The patient was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
FDNY urges all New Yorkers and visitors to our great city to take precautions when swimming both in pools, and in the 520 miles of water surrounding this city. Remember that lifeguards are there for your protection. See more #FDNYSmart tips at fdnysmart.org"

Out of curiosity, what are the capabilities of the water rescue companies outside of the Rescues? Are they limited to surface water rescues or do they dive too? What equipment do they carry?
