Responded to those buildings a thousand times. Projects along Avenue D and Columbia Street. Unlike, for example, Schomborg Plaza, these were originally incinerators later converted to compactors. Can't tell you how many times we either lit up the blockage from above and waited for it to fall...or dropped a cinder block attempting the same thing. Worst spot was the roofman...climbing that wrought iron ladder on a freezing cold windy night to clear the spark arrestor. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Stay safe.

Incinerator fires are still in the books but after 20 years of responding to NYCHA buildings I have not encountered an active one.

I am not sure what code calls for but I’m assuming NYCHA has converted all of them to regular compactors - without the burning.
