"Early this morning, FDNY units operated at a 3-alarm fire at 93-48 212 Street in Queens. The fire was located in a 1-story commercial building and was placed under control at 4:45 am. The fire is currently under investigation by FDNY Fire Marshals."

E 251 is one of the few companies that is always covered with a relocation because they are alone in a large remote district. I don't understand why they would send E66 all the way from the Bronx while both 313 and 306 seem to be available and are much closer

It’s all the new algorithms since BARB was installed - they relocated E90 to E251 today

Here are my thoughts. If you look at the relocated companies listed they are usually from other boroughs. Whomever is doing the rundown hears them. However, you generally don’t see the companies from within the borough the fire is in because many times they don’t have to sign-on the air. They get the ticket & acknowledge in-house and then go 10-84 on the MDT when arriving at the station they were sent to. However, you will see the companies from within the borough listed many times when they are redirected to the scene from their relocation assignment because the dispatcher needs the acknowledgment (E26 acting E10, respond to the 3rd). So the rundown will show E26 Acting E10 in the relocations with the black line —— through it when they get bumped to the scene. If it didn’t go to a 3rd alarm, Engine 26 may have never spoken up.

Okay, that’s good and fine but what does it mean? In the particular case in question, perhaps E306 was relocated somewhere which wasn’t announced. So if E313 was relocated to E251 there would be another gap created. As it is, E313 would be playing “zone defense” from their firehouse and helping to cover E306 & E251 districts. With Engine 66 coming into the area, now there are 2 engines in the area for coverage. Yes, there is a certain “roll of the dice” having E313 covering a large area until E66 gets into the area. BUT, all fires create small time frames where limited coverage will exist while units are on the move. Also, not every station can be covered with an engine and/or ladder all the time. Zone defense, whether an engine or ladder response area, will have to be covered by another station. (If every ladder would get coverage (143 total), then there would have to be 150 ladders on-duty in the city to cover the 7 stations where the ladders came from during a 3rd alarm. Impossibility!

Sorry, I get carried away with logistics.

I always find it interesting when a company gets relocated to their 2nd or 3rd due neighbors. Rare, but it happens. E313 runs in 2nd due with E251. Now, like you said, they’re on runs in an area 2x their size. They cover their own area from E251 quarters. I never saw the reason in doing that. If it comes down to getting the next closest company into the area, that’s a different story. As FDNEWYORK.com says, you’re robbing Peter to pay Paul when it comes to relocating and fire coverage. I’ve seen TL161 relocated to TL153 before. All that does is give them (or L166, L169) longer runs back into TL161’s area.

In regard to 251 getting a relocator, one of the main reasons is that they are 1st due at a huge medical facility right at the Queens/Nassau border. If they are not covered, as previously stated, it's a hell of a long run for 313, 304, 326 or whoever is coming in behind them. It seems like an eternity when you have the only line on the fire until the troops arrive.

There is a lot that goes into relocations, particularly in Queens. Queens and Manhattan have alot of "DO NOT RELOCATE" and "MUST FILL" companies. Now add the list of outdated apparatus so those companies cant relocate. Now any fires before that and did companies relocate? Is the engine or ladder from same house relocated? Sometimes you gota do what gota do tho.

In terms of relocating a company to a second due company it usually depends on the area. Lets use Brooklyn and Canarsie for example. Might be a quick relocation (maybe oos mechanical quick) and take for arguments sake 283 to relocate to 257. The thinking is yes they run in second due with them, but now a engine is further south. So now when the Bayview Projects come in, a engine can be there in something like 6 mins, as compared to 8-9 mins for the second due company. And 283s area, while yes 283/257 would respond back up to some of the boxes, you also have 227,231,310, 234 able to come in from every angle.

Thanks for all the responses. I think that the computer is trying to provide better coverage. I think that lacking the computer a supervising dispatcher would not send E66 to a distant critical relocation like E251

I can remember back in the day, when a fifth alarm in most of Queens was all Queens companies.

This morning there was a box out in Little Neck and a box came in for the LIJ hospital facility. Until 313 & 164 became available, 320 & 167 were assigned, which is a hell of a long distance run.
