Back in the day this would have posed a real dilemma for the fire alarm operators (IBEW Local#5) downtown on the ninth floor of the City-County Building on Grant Street; which box to send out.

They could have used 3217 at West Carson and Earl Streets (10, 39. 40) on the south side of the Ohio River.

More likely, they would have used 7196 at Island and Preble Avenues (45, 47, 43) on the north side of the river, just up river from the now closed Western State Penitentiary.

Except for Engine 10 on the second, the running assignments for these two boxes are completely different.

10, 39, 40 were renumbered to present day 29, 30, 31
45, 47, 43 were renumbered to present day 35, 37, 33

Box 7136 is about 4500 feet southeast of box 7196. On the first alarm Engine 52 on Shadeland Ave. can probably beat Engine 43 at Arch and Jacksonia St. All other assignments are likely the same. Box 7136 is three doors west of 47Engine/47 Truck's quarters. Note that a new relocator moves into 47's with each additional alarm.

You have to feel sorry for Engine 40 on Chartiers Avenue. As the crow flies, it is 5000 feet west of Brunot's Island. However, due to Pittsburgh topography, the best they can do is relocate south to adjoining Engine 39 on the sixth alarm.
