I figured that but had never heard it put quite that way, “chasing gas”. Perhaps in house jargon I am not privy to.

Interesting , though. I am well aware of the old Coal Depots and how that intricate system worked to supply the steamers. I have never dug into how the re-supply of petroleum in the department works. Certain houses I know dispense diesel to surrounding companies are but I do not know exactly which ones. 79/37 I think do, but not sure beyond that. (Back in the gasoline days, there was the horrific incident at the quarters of 94/48.) A rather routine function, but maybe someone can provide more info on this?
