Last night FDNY Marine 8 and Marine 9 responded to a barge on fire that was being used to launch fireworks off the coast of Staten Island. FDNY Marine Units arrived on scene and found the barge heavily involved in fire and still actively shooting off fireworks creating a very hazardous situation for both Firefighters and civilians. Firefighters conducted a search to ensure everyone was off the barge and that no one was in the water. Large caliber streams from both Marine 8 and Marine 9 were used to extinguish the fire and bring it under control. Thankfully no injuries were reported.

Here is a little additional history on the incident. The marine battalion requested Marine 6 to respond since both Marine 8 & 9 were using the small boats (33'). Marine 6 is a 65' vessel & can out pump the two smaller boats. At the time of the dispatch Marine 6 was heading up river on another call. Marine 4 cancelled Marine 6's response & Marine 6 was directed to the fire. The barge was involved in a legal fireworks display. FDNY was requested by the local NJ police dept & responded. Marine 8 arrived first & went to work. Marine 9 continued in to assist. There were no person on board or reported injured. Between the two vessels the main body of fire was knocked down & Marine 6 & Marine Battalion returned back in service.

Thanks for the update

Wouldn't this "incident" be an "all hands" mutual aid call to Perth Amboy NJ where the barge was moored ? Also what box number would be used ?

FDNY has for years has helping to protect the waters that surround NYC. Marine 1 will assist in the Hudson River & the Kills covering NJ besides Westchester Co. Marine 3 assist regularly Nassau Co & NJ while Marine 4 in Long Island Sound going to help out Westchester & Nassau Co's. Marine 6 also is 2nd due into Marine 4's area and goes outside the city limits often. Marine 4 responds 2nd due in the north end of the city along the banks of the Hudson River covering NJ & Westchester. Marine 8 responds daily with either Marine 3 or 9 into NJ's Sandy Hook Bay & Raritan Bay to local NJ authorities. Marine 9 several years ago had on their shirts "OCEAN RESCUE". They will cover not only the waters that surround Staten Island but also the ocean side of the Rockaway's with Marine 3 but also cover the entrance channel into the Port of NY & NJ. These responses are automatic for the marine companies and NOT considered mutual aid. Over the years regular box numbers are used. Remember that Marine 3, 4, and 8 are only 'summer time' units.

The barge was off of Great Beds Light which is basically where the Raritan River, Raritan Bay and the Arthur Kill meet. between South Amboy, Perth Amboy and Staten Island.....FDNY assistance was requested when Perth Amboy Marine 5 had mechanical issues.....
