Old assignment card from 1967, notice how L46 originally relocated to L37 even though E81 was 2nd due on the 2nd alarm:

MAC8146 and G-man..."Mr Inside and Mr Outside", like the old West Point Heisman Trophy halfbacks...you guys always post great and accurate info..many thanks!

G-man, notice L37 was covered once both L33 and 32 went to work. Ditto L38 on 3d alarm. Two of those four were always covered.

It always puzzled me why E38 went to 79 and 90 to 62. Seems that it should be the other way around, 38 to 62 and 90 to 79. 38 has to go right past 62 to get to 79.

You can't put too much thought into relocations. With companies OOS or operating at others boxes things change by the minute.

You're right. Today the situation is much more fluid, with better communications.

Back then, however, it was how buffs gamed the system. Rarely was there more than one fire at a  time. You could figure out where that was likely to be just by relocations. If your saw an unusual company in the neighborhood you knew something BIG was up.
