But while I am at it (love getting tangled up in this stuff)...
Traditional assignment, when all companies in their original quarters (pre 1980s)...

48s move a few blocks south in 1984j jumbled the whole assignment. Pre BARB, 48 a straight run up Webster Ave. while 81 a crooked wind up the hill. All else equal in mileage, 81 out leaves Kingsbridge, Riverdale, and Inwood a little thin while plenty of backflll for 48. Not sure which one now but I am guessing 81.

Then 63/39 move further from the box but are 3d due...eh? Here's why. Webster Ave from 233d St to Gun Hill road a virtual freeway with no traffic or lights. A longer but faster run than 38/51, who have to go through Gun Hill and The Bronx River Parkway, always a big mess.

Things do change and just a few blocks make a big difference.
