7/9/21 MANHATTAN “HYDRANT MAIN BREAK” BOX 1058

^^^^^ For those outside NYC & not familiar with the odd spray painted different colored dots on the top of the Catch Basin opening pictured above.....these are placed there by people who work for the NYC DEP ....they go around on a route (some on bicycles) & put larvicide into the basins to kill breeding mosquitoes ....they mark it with a squirt to avoid redundant applications thru whatever color code they use ..... seeing these markings especially fresh ones should be a caution not to breathe smoke coming from any leaves or rubbish that may somehow have ignited in the treated catch basin.

I like this type of stuff. Institutional knowledge that's passed down from one generation to the next. I've never met a group of people who have a general overall knowledge of just about everything as firefighters! If you've got 6 people on location, there's a good chance someone has seen or dealt with a unique situation... it's what makes the fire service so adaptable.
