Cutoff is Ocean PWKY, this is RI don't know where
Rescue 5 is closer. Rescue 5'' s firehouse is 9 miles from Brighton Beach location. Rescue 2 is about 12 miles, unless they want to use Kings Highway and cut across Brooklyn - and it is still about a half a mile further away with awful traffic. If Rescue 2 is assigned, it is not because they are closer.

Note - I remember in the early 1970s, when Coney Island was burning down, there was no rescue assigned to Coney Island boxes until the 3rd alarm was transmitted. Rescue 2 was so busy covering Brooklyn and Rescue 5 had been disbanded in the early 1960s and did not get reorganized until the 1980s. As I remember, when reorganized, Rescue 5 was not initially assigned Brooklyn boxes even thought they were located very close to the VN Bridge and could easily get to Bay Ridge and CI.

Also, Division 8, located near the bridge, was historically a SI response only. They did not leave SI, especially in the days of the 69th Street Brooklyn Ferry (pre-VN Bridge). They eventually picked up 2 battalions administratively in Brooklyn and respond across the bridge.

If Division 8 or Rescue 5 are located on the South Shore of SI and they get a working fire in Brooklyn, they could have a 20 or 25 mile run so that might be why Rescue 2 is assigned Manhattan Beach and Brighton Beach, and other Brooklyn locations even though their quarters might be further away than Rescue 5's firehouse.
