776 Box ..Reid Ave (now Malcom X Blvd) & Broadway used to be the last 108 1st Due Box on Broadway when we were on Siegel St.....also back then 218 was 1st Due ENG at 776.....also back then the Truckless Triangle did not really exist as we got to many of those Boxes before the 1st ENG or right after them.....the move to Union Ave created the T. T.

Thanks for sharing the information about 108 . I always wondered how far down Broadway they came when they were on siegel street

The Response Route to 776 from the old 108 FH on Siegel St bet Humboldt & Graham avoided the more obvious but traffic filled Graham Av from Siegel St to Broadway.....(that strip along Graham was a busy shopping area)....the Route was RT out of Qtrs ...LFT onto Humboldt St (several lanes wide due to the projects on one side) continuing across Flushing Ave down the one block Sumner Place then LFT on Broadway to 776......similarly if Responding to our farthest 2nd Due Sumner Ave Box 904 Sumner & Putnam we would go straight from Sumner Place across Broadway onto Sumner Ave then down Sumner Ave to 904........if going to Boxes East on Bushwick Ave past Arion Place we would go RT out of Qtrs LFT on Humboldt then LFT on Flushing then RT on Beaver St & hit Bushwick Ave at Arion Place Box 716.

Thanks for your insight on 108 back then. So that means 108 came further down boxes on Stuyvesant, Lewis, & Sumner Avenues on the initial alarm

Farthest 2nd Due on Sumner (now Marcus Garvey Blvd) was to Putnam, Box 904......traffic on Lewis flowed against us so not as far on Lewis as Sumner ...also back then 176 had not been organized & 112 was still on Madison St. & 123 was still on Ralph & Bergen.

Who picked up the boxes 108 lost in the move?

Ladder 112 responded to boxes almost to Johnson Ave. and at one time went as far as Metropolitan and Scott Aves.
They also responded as far as Sumner and Putman Aves. They probably picked up the most boxes.

The Boxes we lost were some working Boxes however at the time we thought the Boxes we would pick up on the Southside would make up for them but that did not equal out .....also it seemed at the time that the Firestorm might be moving toward Greenpoint (which was loaded with Wood Frames) however the Firestorm actually progressed thru Bushwick....had we stayed on Siegel St the work would have been more....the odd fact is that the original FH lot at 112 Siegel St which we left for the last time on 8-8-71 still remains vacant to this day (probably one of the few undeveloped lots in the much sought after NYC Real Estate market ). https://www.google.com/maps/@40.704...YInbIB-eBsGajtPg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu .....there was plenty of vacant land around the old FH block at the time....had the City built a new FH right there the work may have been pretty extreme ....JMO.

112 picked up the boxes in Bushwick and some in Bed-stuy and 102 got the rest in Bed-stuy. After 108 moved in 1971 a new fire house was built on Ralph Avenue and 112 was supposed to go there with 222 & 37 but it never happened. Interesting to note that when 112 & 277 moved to Ralph Avenue in 2002 to 2007 112 went on alot of those boxes along Broadway & Bushwick Avenue that 108 had when they were on Siegel street and there probably wouldn't be a truck less triangle today if 112 had stayed on Ralph Avenue

Another interesting note was that during this time and up until the early 1980s 108 was a truck that bent

We were still in the Tin House when we got a run on Reid Ave., don't remember cross street but traffic was light and we were making good time. We kept heading west when somebody gave a 10-92 for the box we were responding to. It seems like they never told us it wasn't Reid anymore but Malcom x. In fact in Brownsville they kept changing the names of streets, Stone Ave. now Mother Gaston Blvd. , Hopkinson Ave. now Boyland Blvd. and the list goes on. The computer printout should have listed the old and the new names of the streets to dispel any confusion. That Reid Ave. box was not a normal assignment thus the lack of knowledge of the change on our part. Another run in East New York on Liberty Ave. and Milford St., all the streets are named so you have to memorize them, so again not a normal response but the Street sign for Milford was missing and sure enough we passed it by. Maybe if there were fires at the locations we would have been able to zero in. Every run was an adventure back in the day.

Just looking at a map, 112 on Ralph makes a lot of sense. However knowing what was going on in Bushwick in the 80's, it probably made more sense for them to stay on Knick

The Bushwick community was supposedly very upset with the proposed move of 112 to Ralph Ave. They felt like the city was abandoning them to appease the Bed-Stuy/Brownsville community (i.e. political/voting base). Ultimately, as we know, Bushwick "won" out and 112 stayed there.

^^^^ The DCs in the former 17*DV were the force behind keeping 112 on Knickerbocker Ave in "Wood City"..... back then there was very little community involvement....also very little acknowledgement of community wishes (if any) by the city.

I heard both accounts to the reason 112 didn't go to Ralph Avenue permanently I'm glad them and 277 aren't back to back anymore. They were like that for almost 30 years and 50 years has passed since 108 was on seigel street

Before 112 moved from their Single FH on Madison St 277 was back to back on Knickerbocker Ave with TCU*732 daily during the adaptive response hrs. .......also the similar FH at 160 Carlton Ave housed R*2 & 210 back to back for many years up until August 1985...... also during the late '50s ..60s & early '70s many of the SQUAD;s were in a single bay back to back with ENGs.
