Mutual Aid with New Jersey Fire Departments will never happen. Unfortunately, in my opinion, it will take a major event for the citizens of Staten Island to wake up politically and demand adequate fire protection. While we all would agree that Staten Island companies are not the busiest in the City, there are places on the Island where response times are long, coverage is thin and the potential for disaster exists. Maybe someday Staten Island will get the protection it deserves.

The houses on Churchill, exposure 3, were about 50 feet behind 82 and 84 Pitney. The heat from the fire still, however, melted the rear siding and extended a bit into the attics. Any info on a possible cause of the fire ?

Yes and I’ve never seen them respond to a multiple alarm structure fire - brush fire is different story.

I’d say both are equal by jumping on the highway. Oceanic onto the West Shore EXPWY and Richmond onto the Korean War Vet PKWY. Straight shot for both - just don’t think a volunteer company would respond to a fire like this. Maybe I’m wrong and they could or would? I’ve always been curious as to what Richmond engine responds to. I’ve seen them at brush fires assisting and heard them on SI radio at runs here and there mid-island.

They really just need that extra Battalion… and for how many fires they be having in E158 area possible moving 80 truck there as TL79 has a very small area they cover. I don’t think the call volume is on Staten Island for 2 more engines, I really don’t see it while 2 engines can for sure be used in different areas of the city. Just my opinion….

It's not about the number of runs or the numbers of fires. It's about adequate fire protection. SI is heading towards half a million population. SI has had only 3 BCs for 90 years. There are no trucks on the West Shore - all single engines. And there are still parts of SI that can take 5 minutes for a 1st due engine or truck to get to - if they are available.
