To disengage the motor from the chain sprocket at top
Of door need to pull a metal cable. If that works the chain to raise the door is then operated. Pull like a maniac to raise the door as the gearing makes it a very slow process. Rig pulls out then have to lower. If that did work for 55 probably could
Take off and a LD aide in divison would be around to watch door until lowered and 55 could go to job

As bx engine wrote above you have no idea if the cable to disengage will actually work until you pull it. Definitely not something we’d check on. I remember having problem 2x with manual operation. Once the cable just broke when pulled and another time it just did not disengage.

In any event if you hit the button to open door on a response and it doesn’t work and need to go to manual you’re
Pretty much out of the picture for awhile

Had the entire mechanism rotted out once (shows you how often it gets checked) and half the gears just kinda flaked away lol

Who said the Bronx is burning? Years ago. A 4th alarm and a 2nd alarm in about just 2 days. Somebody is still doing some fire duty.
Also, on the door situation I believe it still in the FDNY Regulations that you must train on the "Back Up/Manual" use of the chains, to be used to raise the apparatus doors. The FDNY book of Regulations at one time said if you cannot raise the apparatus door/s, call the Borough Dispatcher to have a Rescue Company come and force the apparatus door/s open, I believe that a Comealong or a GripHoist was to be used in conjunction with chains and "J" hooks were used by Rescue to raise the door if nothing else worked. I remember a question about this on I think on my Captains Exam in the late 1980's. I was also trained to use the Griphoist for auto extrication, it can work great.
Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired.
