In recent videos I have noticed that Tower Ladder Tormentor have not been fully extended on both sides of the Tower Ladder. Tower Ladders ARE designed to have all the Tormentor and Jacks extended in such a way that the all the rigs' tires are off the ground if at all possible. If they are not, then the stability of the Tower Ladder, or Snorkel, for that matter, is compromised and in danger of damaging the rig, or even worse causing the Tower Ladder to TIP OVER. I have been teaching Tower Ladder Tactics for a number of years, and I have numerous photographs saved that show Tower Ladder Laying on their sides due to lack of proper jacking. These photos including very busy FDNY Units and Volunteer units in many locations. Also, when are lower the Tormentors OR Jacks may sure you know what you KNOW what is under the location of the jacking pads.
Placing the 70,000 L.B.S. Tower Ladder on Grass, sand, or any place where you DO NOT KNOW what is under the rig is very unsafe. I spent over 20 years in my 30 year, FDNY Career working as both a Firefighter and Fire Officer in some the busiest FDNY Tower Ladders in the FDNY. here is one photo of a Tower Ladder tipped over due to "Short Jacking & Ice Below the unit. The tormentor on the building side of the rig was not extended fully in an attempt to reach trapped people. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired.
