All 3 engines (and both trucks) arrive pretty close - 3 firehouses about 2 miles away. E 159 and E 165 (L 85) could both use Midland Avenue and be right behind one another.

My father transferred from Brooklyn to Eng 165 when they opened the new New Dorp firehouse in 1960. It was a good Richmond firehouse to be assigned to because they were centrally located on SI. E 166 and E 167 had not been organized. They had a nice road network to get to different parts of the island. And they had a good roster of members in both the engine and the truck. A lot of hand-picked guys with good experience from other boros. They were assigned as the 3rd engine to a lot of working fires or on the 2nd alarm to much of the Island. Midland Beach was about the same run for them as it was for E 159, and he admitted that they stepped it up to try and beat 159 in to boxes in that area.

Good info. 165/85 like you said centrally located, house responds to south shore, mid island and even north shore usually on the AH. Even more so if s/c. 85 is the only 95’ on SI, for now at least.

I can remember going to 165/85 house when I was a kid probably early '70s and they had a Mack tiller there.

How many FF's could ride on the Mack TD which only had two seats in the cab ? Did the FF's other than the tiller driver ride on the running
boards ?

You have it correct, Chauf and Officer up front, OVM in Tiller. Other guys rode the side of the ladder. We had one for a spare in winter and baby it was cold. Don’t know had guys did it way back when. Now the rigs are A/C, heated etc. 😂
The late Senior Man Harry Gillen (L131) wouldn’t accept a spare rig from shops one winter because window in cab wouldn’t go up, he said it would be too cold in cab! Shops fixed it forthwith. Love that guy.

The Mack "Postal Cabs" replaced tractor portions of older Aerials.....i seem to think there may have been 10 in the FDNY ?.... I remember when a friend in LAD*140 told me how nice his new one was ......he said "it's all enclosed & it even has a cigarette lighter in the dash"..... i saw him after his first job with it & when i asked him about it he said " yea the XXXXXX power takeoff handle came right off in my hand .....we couldn't use the Aerial" .......i don't remember what Trailer section 140 had back then but they did at one time have a Pirsch that had been LAD*26.
