B 23, Engs 164, 167, 162 and ladders 82, 84, and 87 responded to a fire in a solar powered electrical vehicle charging station in Wolf's Pond Park. Eng 165 and the Hazmat Technical Unit were also special called. The solar collector panel is about 15 feet by15 feet wide and connected to the ground by a thick metal pole about 10 feet high. At the base of the pole is a plastic enclosure for four batteries to store the electricity collected by the panel. When I arrived on the scene no vehicles were connected to the charging unit. A light white stream of smoke eminated from the base with the batteries. The batteries, the pole, and the collector panel were all heavily scorched. Eng 164 was attempting to douse the fire using a foam line. This did not work entirely as the smoke keept returning. The next strategy was for the FD to pull the entire plastic base apart to separate the batteries and douse them on the pavement. The BC then asked the Parks Dept personnel on the scene for four steel drums and each of the four batteries were placed in a drum and in turn doused with foam. This seemed to eliminate the smoke eminating from the batteries. When the Hazmat unit arrived there was some discussion with the officers but no additional fire fighting actions were taken.
This was the second fire incident on 9/3/2021 at a Parks Department ev charging station in one of the beach parking lots. Not sure location of the first fire.
